There is no denying that cosmetic surgery can come with a hefty price tag. There are a variety of reasons why someone may wish to have cosmetic surgery performed. But for some it is not always possible due to financial restraints. Many people look to financing options when considering costly cosmetic procedures. But if you are looking to finance cosmetic surgery you may have wondered, does insurance cover cosmetic surgery?
The answer to this question will vary from person to person. Depending on the circumstances surrounding your procedure your government or independent health insurance may cover some or all of your procedure. In most cases, if there are no extenuating circumstances or medical need, procedures will not be covered for esthetic purposes. Continue reading “Does Insurance Cover Cosmetic Surgery?”
We all know that eating too much sugar can be detrimental to our waistline, but the negative effects of sugar are far nastier than that. Excessive sugar consumption actually disrupts the normal function of your cells and leads to accelerated aging – a process known as glycation. Advanced Glycation Endpoints (AGEs) is the name cosmetic scientists have given to the irreversible damage caused to proteins by sugar molecules. IRREVERSIBLE!! The more cosmetic scientists, cosmetic dermatologist and aesthetic practitioners know about AGEs, the more interest there has been in finding ways to prevent and treat patients. What is lip rejuvenation?
Whether you want fuller lips or want to restore your lips, there are several options available with the lip rejuvenation procedure. At NewDermaMed our medical professionals make it their priority to understand the goals of the patient and appreciate the patient’s anatomy as it relates to their goal.
Lip Rejuvenation Patients and Goals
- Those with a good shape and definition but who desire augmentation of certain features of their lips.
- Those who have dry chapped lips and desire a natural moist sheen and feel.
- Those that have atrophic lips and desire augmentation.
- Those that have loss of lip definition and/or perioral rhytids.
The list of anatomical woes that people of all ages can have with their lips are uniquely diverse and will change from patient to patient. Luckily the lip rejuvenation procedure can be adjusted to perfectly fit your anatomy and your goals.
The most complex yet rewarding of lip rejuvenation procedures is the lip rejuvenation procedure done for patients in their 60’s and upward, who have lost lip definition and/or perioral rhytids. With age, even the most naturally plump lips thin out, lose fullness, and flatten out. (And it’s not just the lip that is affected.) When the upper lip loses its curve, it elongates and negatively impacts the smile by exposing the mandibular teeth. Barcode lines begin to appear across the radial lip. The lower lip becomes shorter than the upper lip while the lower lip and chin area lose height. For a complete lip rejuvenation at this stage, we may also include Botox Cosmetic. Botox is injected in the perioral area to prolong the durability of the filler and inhibit muscle contractions that make lips turn downward.
Only a medical professional that understands how to measure your profile, and that has mastered the many injection techniques will be able to achieve a subtle and natural result.
The five essential steps your medical professional should take to achieve the best cosmetic result:
- Consider anatomy and structure before injecting
- Use low to medium viscosity fillers like Juvederm Volbella
- Master the right injection techniques (there are many)
- Inject low volumes of filler at a time to avoid over-correction. (less is more)
- Follow up injections on a later date to evaluate if more filler is needed.
My advice: Have a proper consultation with the medical professional that will be doing your lip augmentation procedure. Make sure the medical professional has plenty of experience and spends time evaluating your profile! Keep in mind that when a lip augmentation is done right it will look natural and complement the rest of your features.
At NewDermaMed, we see many patients (mostly women, but not exclusively) come in requesting lip fillers. Some are looking to emulate a celebrity’s perfect pout, like Angelina Jolie, or like the unofficial face of lip fillers, Kylie Jenner, who went from thin lips to full lips, to fuller lips over the course of a few months. Others are requesting more subtle changes to bring back their lips youthful appeal lost over time due to aging. It is important to differentiate between these two lip filler procedures when doing your research. Both procedures are considered lip augmentations, but the latter is known as a lip rejuvenation.
A lip augmentation is meant for those individuals that are unhappy with the shape and structure of their natural lips. Perhaps they feel that their lips are too thin, or too imbalanced. Whatever their reason for wanting a lip augmentation, the structure of classically beautiful lips will always be used for comparison. Going by Hollywood standards, classically beautiful lips are curved, distinct and with a well-defined cupids bow.
Other important features of aesthetically beautiful lips include:
- The lower lip should be about a third thicker than the upper lips.
- The lower lip should also measure longer from corner to corner than the upper lip.
- The corners of the mouth should be straight or slightly elevated.
- The distance between the nose and upper lip should be approximately 18-20 millimetres.
- The distance from lower lip to the chin should be approximately 36 to 40 millimetres.
The goal of a lip augmentation: Of course, not everyone is born with the anatomy to suit this ideal lip structure, so the goal of a lip augmentation should not be to follow those exact specifications. The main goal of a lip augmentation is to achieve the ideal shape for your unique profile. Only a highly skilled medical professional will know exactly how to evaluate your profile to determine the best shape for you.
Vitamin C is an essential antioxidant, but unlike plants and animals, humans rely on external supplementation. The necessity of the vitamin C antioxidant in our diet was discovered by Dr. Albert Goyrgi when he exposed Vitamin C deficiency to be the cause of Scurvy. Goyrgi found that humans cannot synthesize Vitamin C due to our lack of the enzyme ‘glucono-gamma lactone oxidase’. He even won a Nobel Prize for it! Nowadays, many of us take vitamin C supplements, or eat enough green vegetables and citrus fruits to sufficiently get our intake. Even packaged processed foods include vitamin C in their ingredients. I think it’s safe to say, we have scurvy covered. So let’s not allow this incredible antioxidant be glorified only as a historic illness fighting entity.
Vitamin C is also the most beneficial antioxidant for the maintenance and protection of our skin. Vitamin C absorption from diet alone will no doubt help our immune systems fight off all kinds of viruses, but it is limiting the vitamins beautiful skin promoting abilities. And that is such a shame when there are so many benefits to boast. Some may think, “If I take higher doses of vitamin C, I will get those benefits”. Right? Wrong! Even with higher doses of oral Vitamin C, only a fraction will be biologically available and active in the skin. In order to achieve the ultimate Vitamin C action in the skin, cosmeceuticals are the answer. Yes, vitamin C can effectively be absorbed through the skin and in order to achieve full skin promoting benefits, a vitamin C serum or cream should be a part of your daily skin regime.
Topically applying Vitamin C in the case of cosmeceuticals protects our skin cells from oxidative stress and free radical damage caused by pollution, smoking and solar radiation. To help you understand what this all means, let me explain. Oxidative stress is when your skin is exposed to toxic environmental factors and the actual skin cells can’t thrive. The lack of clean oxygen suffocates your cells and leads to the formation of sunburn cells, thymine dimers, solar elastosis, and irregular cell cycle division. ‘Free radicals’ are the toxic unstable molecules in your skin that are reactive to the oxidative stress. Free-radicals actually cause damage to your DNA, proteins, and cell membranes and manifest photo-damage, photo-ageing, and by far the worst, skin cancer.
Out of all the antioxidants (Vitamin E, feluric acid, phloretin, idebenone, green tea, resveratrol, lycopene, grape seed, niacinamide, ubiquinone, geinstein, silymarin, coffee berry, polyhydroxy acids, carotenoids, kinetin, and glutathione) vitamin C is by far the most powerful antioxidant for neutralizing the formation of free radicals in the skin. Clinical studies have proven that applying vitamin C to the skin will actually improve all parameters of photodamage and reduce the risk of skin cancer. But surprise, that is not all of the beautiful skin promoting qualities of vitamin C. In addition to the photodamage and skin cancer protection benefits, (in of itself are reason to jump on the vitamin C topical application wagon) vitamin C is essential for:
- Collagen Biosynthesis
- Inhibition of collagen breakdown
- Stabilisation of collagen fibres
- Inhibiting the biosynthesis of elastin. (elastin is the enzyme that degrades elastic fibres in the skin causing photodamage.)
- Anti-inflammatory effect
- Anti-pigmentation effect
Though the vitamin C antioxidant has so many wonderful skin promoting benefits on its own, when used in combination with sunblock the effects are complimented and improved. When looking for a vitamin C product to use daily, you may find that there are many formulations. Here is my best advice: Go with a brand known for their quality like IS Clinical or Prescribed Solutions and look for the ingredient L-ascorbic acid as it is the most biologically active form of the antioxidant when formulated appropriately.
During the summer, I always felt so cute with my sun tan and fresh freckles. But as an adult, come winter, my fair skin was a canvas of blotchiness, hyperpigmentation, and sunspots in all the wrong places. I never really thought that blotchiness was going to be such a problem for me, but UVA and UVB sun damage caught up to me, and it was definitely a problem. The only way to cover up my blotchiness was to wear tons of foundation and cover up that I was totally uncomfortable wearing since I always had clear skin. I didn’t feel like myself with foundation and cover up and I didn’t feel like myself without it. A conundrum of sorts. It wasn’t until I went to a cosmetic dermatologist and learned about the latest photofacial technology for permanently treating sun spots like mine, that I was able to regain my skin confidence. The Cutera Limelight Photo Rejuvenation treatment is a versatile and powerful innovation, providing the safest and most effective treatment for age spots, sun spots, and hyperpigmentation. Over the past 2 years I have received approximately 6 Limelight treatments, and I continue to do them seasonally for touch ups. My skin has literally never looked better.
The Limelight treatment involves a technology called intense pulse light (IPL) to safely and effectively remove signs of aging and sun damage. The light energy specifically targets the pigments in your skin that make it appear blotchy and uneven. You can have the treatment done in a specific spot on your face or body, or you can have it done on a larger area. I do my entire face because there are other benefits to the treatment besides eliminating unwanted pigment. The treatment brightens skin, treats fine lines, enlarged pores, broken capillaries, redness, and mild skin texture issues. It really is a revolutionary treatment.
The entire treatment takes 30 minutes and it is pretty feasible to do inconspicuously over a lunch hour at work. Besides some very minor swelling, and darkening of the pigmented spots, you can walk out of your appointment, put on a little makeup and go back to work without anyone noticing. I mean, as long as you aren’t pointing it out. Within a day the swelling goes down, and within one week the pigments will have made their way to the top of the skin. With a light exfoliation or two the spots will eventually slough off and after 3-6 treatments the spots will never to be seen or heard from again. Well, as long as you stay out of the sun of course!
After receiving my Limelight treatments, I am much more conscious of wearing sunscreen and limiting my sun exposure because life without foundation is just so much better. I don’t want to go back to blotchiness, sunspots and hyperpigmentation, even if it means giving up my cute tan and fresh freckles.
Before taking the plunge into surgery, why not try the non-surgical facelift known as the SOFT LIFT? The SOFT LIFT is a customized total facial rejuvenation procedure that combines Juvederm with Botox Cosmetic to enhance your natural beauty at any age. The treatment is non-invasive and beneficial for both men and woman looking to rejuvenate, refresh and rebalance their look.
The SOFT LIFT procedure is painless, there is no downtime, and the results are very natural looking. You will look just like you, only more radiant and youthful. Moreover, you do not have to consider the serious potential complications that you would with surgery and if you do not like the way you look, (which you will!) it’s entirely reversible, whereas surgery is not.
SIGNS OF AGING TO BE ADDRESSED BY THE SOFT LIFT
Natural signs of aging in our skin are due to the slowing of skin cell renewal, decreased collagen and hyaluronic acid production. Usually the signs of aging begin showing in our 30’s. Skin begins to lose its volume and elasticity, while wrinkles develop on the forehead, around the eyes, and between the nose and mouth. A surgical facelift cannot address the loss of volume, elasticity, collagen and hyaluronic acid production. The SOFT LIFT is the only facelift that can address all of these issues and in a single session no less! Pretty impressive I’d say.
HOW DOES THE SOFT LIFT WORK?
The SOFT LIFT procedure is performed by a medical professional that will customize the treatment to each patient’s unique needs with a combination of Botox Cosmetic and Juvederm dermal filler. Whether your motivation is for prevention, or rejuvenation, the SOFT LIFT procedure can achieve your desired results. The goal of the SOFT LIFT is always to keep your natural beauty in balance at every age.
Botox and Juvederm address different key areas of the face that show signs of aging.
Dynamic wrinkles like the frown lines, forehead lines, and Crows Feet are best treated with Botox. Tiny painless injections relax facial muscles and fade lines with noticeable improvement in just days. The results can last up to 4 months, however, overtime continual injections may prevent further wrinkles that may have appeared otherwise. Botox is the most widely used Botulinum treatment around the world. It will safely enhance the way you look instead of changing the way you look. An experienced medical professional will make your appearance look more natural and refreshed.
Redefining facial contours, smoothing skin and adding natural looking volume can only be addressed with Juvederm. Juvederm Voluma and Volift are the preferred dermal fillers because they are next generation dermal fillers made from hyaluronic acid – a naturally occurring sugar found in your own body. The procedure involves little to no discomfort and it is clinically proven to last up to one year. The results will immediately make you look fresher, younger and more relaxed. You will just love it!
If you are considering to have the SOFT LIFT procedure, we would love to offer you a complimentary consultation with our medical professionals. We can analyze your skin and design a personal treatment plan to help you achieve your aesthetic goal.
As a young person, I basically never worked out. Going to the gym seemed like an awful endeavour and I was happy enough with my body because I was always relatively thin. It wasn’t until my late 20’s that I realized my natural thin body was losing its way. My legs and bottom had cellulite and my love handles were in my opinion, unlovable. At first, in true lackadaisical form, I paid an absurd amount of money at a Toronto cosmetic clinic to have a procedure done where a machine gets rid of extra inches and cellulite. Did it work? No, it didn’t. Because those things are scams! If only I had known then what I know now.
After that sad experience, I knew I had to get in shape the old fashioned way – I had to work out. I got myself a personal trainer whom I saw twice a week and I would do my own work out once a week. When I started I was approximately 130 pounds and 26% body fat (I am 5 foot 3 and a quarter). That is on the higher side of the healthy range, and by no means considered fit. But I wanted to be fit!
It has been 2 and a half years since I started this workout regime and my body is definitely stronger now. I have much better stamina and I can lift heavier than I ever thought possible. But, I am still nowhere close to where I want to be. Sure I have lost 5 pounds, but my body fat percentage is still at 26%. I still have unlovable love handles. I still have cellulite invading my rear.
So what have I been doing wrong? I spoke to a professional fitness trainer who prepares fitness models for competitions and this is what he said are the top 4 reasons why I am not losing body fat.
- You Over-Eat
If you eat fewer calories than you expend in a day, you will lose weight. “Calories in, calories out” is a good expression to go by, but it’s important to keep in mind that the type of calories you are eating also matters. You need the right combination of protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats to build muscle and burn fat. Also, keep in mind that even when you are eating something considered healthy, like a salad, it can be very high in calories because of the dressing. And when you eat out at restaurants, you can never be sure of the contents of your meal. Your “healthy” salmon filet with a side of veg could be cooked in butter, adding hundreds of additional calories.
- Your Diet is Too Low in Protein
Protein builds and repairs muscle tissue, keeps you feeling less hungry, and has a positive effect on the body’s blood lipids, glucose levels, and muscle-to fat ratios. Choosing high protein foods at every major meal instead of carbohydrates will result in fat loss over time.
- You Have High Stress Levels
Stress can be holding you back from your fat loss goals. When you are stressed, your body produces a fat producing hormone called cortisol. Try lowering your stress levels by doing yoga, meditating, taking a bath, or reading. Whatever it is that helps you relax, do it, because your fat loss depends on it.
- You are Sleep Deprived
Sleep is so necessary for our body and mind to function, let alone lose body fat. Sleep deprivation can cause insulin sensitivity and heightened cortisol levels, which will keep your body’s fat storage high. Sleep must be a priority on your fat loss journey. A minimum of 8 hours a night seems like a lot for most working people, but it is the optimal amount for fat loss. Try limiting your caffeine intake and turn off your electronics an hour before bedtime to set yourself up for a good night sleep.
For as long as I can remember, a surgical nose job was the only option for individuals who were unhappy with the look of their nose. A surgical nose job, also called rhinoplasty, is a very high impact procedure that comes with several concerns. Besides getting put under anaesthesia which can be dangerous in itself, a surgeon literally has to cut your nose open and hammer the cartilage into shape. The room for error is huge, and the results are permanent. Also, the healing time is no easy feat. It can take weeks for the swelling to go down and it can take up to a year for your nose to fully settle. That is a long time to wait! Of course, for some individuals, with major shape or size issues, a surgical nose job may be their best bet. But for those individuals who need more minor or subtle changes like grooves, indentations, lumps or bumps, there is a new non-surgical nose job procedure that can easily correct these imperfections with no downtime whatsoever.
The non-surgical nose job is not magic, though it is revolutionary. The procedure uses hyaluronic acid dermal fillers to add volume and augment the nose with the least amount of impact. A good injector can quickly and easily correct imperfections by manipulating the shape in very subtle ways. Though the procedure can’t take away excess height or excess bulk, it can add an illusion of a more refined nose. By working on the shape and symmetry of the nose, the non-surgical nose job will cheat the eye, making it appear smaller, thinner, or more defined. Juvederm Voluma is the best hyaluronic dermal filler for the non-surgical nose job because it has been modified to last 9-12 months in the nose. The injection has a numbing solution, so not only is the procedure quick, but you can’t feel a thing! Another major plus to the procedure, is that if you don’t like the results, the product can be dissolved and you can have your old nose back.
The procedure can address so many of the issues that people have with their noses and it can be done in as little as 30 minutes. Depending on the issue at hand, there are several techniques that a good injector will use to create the desired effect. The types of issues that the non-surgical nose jobs are really great at correcting are:
A dorsal bump that gives a hook effect. The injector can straighten the hump with filler on either side of the hump and lift the tip so that it appears to point more upward.
A saddle nose that creates a dip or flattened bridge effect above the tip. The injector will use filler to add volume to the dip and make the nose appear lifted and much straighter.
A thin nose with a bulbous tip can be undesirable. The injector will correct this by putting filler into the bridge to make it more even. The overall look will be thinner.
Misshapen nostrils can also be remedied. The injector can use filler to make them appear smaller, change their angle, close some of the width and make them less flared and more narrow.
Botched rhinoplasty can be revised. When people have had a rhinoplasty and are unhappy with the results, fillers can be used to make the necessary revisions – a much less dramatic way to resolve these issues.
If you have ever had any reservations about the appearance of your nose, and have even considered surgery, I highly recommend having a consultation for a non-surgical nose job first. You may be surprised at how happy you will be with the results.
